THE CANDY MAN

He sold drugs on his doorstep
So many people came around
Some drove a distance to get to him
Some came right from our town.

Some came by foot or motorbike
The money was rolling in
You’d think the police would be watching
That they’d be on to him.

But years had passed… he did quite well
He drove a fancy car
He made friends with everyone around
They came from near and far.

We lived across the street from him
I often worried there’d be trouble
A drug deal that had gone awry
Could end up in a struggle.

Bullets flying, knives and chains
I often worried about the danger
But still, no one would call the cops
No one dared to be a complainer.

He was such a friendly, likable guy
Like Willie Wonka, he had had the candy
He distributed the pills they needed
Was always accessible and quite handy.

Downers, uppers, tranquilizers
Just to name a few
Muscle relaxants, opioids
He’d sell them all to you.

Then one day a mother came by
She was incensed and looked quite crazed
She took out her 357, fired it once
Leaving the dealer dazed.

Down he went on the porch
Just like her son who had OD’d
Justice had now… finally been served
She took him out so easily.

  1. While I can sympathize, I sit here in sadness wondering how many more lives she could have saved, how much more justice would have been served, should she had gone to the authorities instead of taking matters into her own hands… πŸ™‚

    1. So true! She was damaged. Unfortunately, the loss of her son was too much to bear. Guess she needed to seek revenge…..even though the outcome was going to be disaterous for her and the drug dealer. His life ends and she ends up in prison…a NO WIN situation! 😦 Part fact/ part fiction: In reality…there was such a person. He lived a cross the street from someone I know. He was dealing right from his home and there was no attempt to stop him. He finally moved away. Ironically, this was also taking place in an upscale neighborhood. Crazy, huh? He wasn’t shot or killed, but he should have been arrested. Thank you for taking the time to read my poem. I greatly appreciate your thoughts and comments! Hope you have a great day! πŸ’™

      1. Yes, in the end she got no solace at all… a lot of today’s problems would not be if society would compromise and bond together a deal with issues instead of turning the backs and thinking it will just go away…..
        Thank you for sharing…. πŸ™‚
