A SECRET

It’s hard to keep a secret
Almost impossible to to do
Was it difficult and painful?
Was it hard for you?

That week you spent in London
A scheduled business trip
One call you made for service
Did you need companionship?

Twenty years and three kids later
A life of harmony
No one would know, you were away
So much for loyalty.

Outed inadvertently
A list was circulated
You made a call at least four times
Were you infatuated?

Can we try to get past this
Consider it an indiscretion?
It happened several years ago
Can I assume you learned your  lesson.

Trust I fear.…has slipped away
I thought that I knew you
If nothing else, I counted on
Your love .… constant and true.

Don’t think I can forgive you
I can’t promise this to you
Never thought that you would be the one
Who’d  break my heart in two.

    1. I totally agree! If not outed, don’t confess! Live with the guilt!!!! A secret kept, can save someone from a broken heart. Bad enough the deed was done. Carry the burden …. save the marriage!
Unfair to share his secret with you, though.
Guess the weight was too heavy to carry alone!
      People do make mistakes! 😢

    1. Yes. Sometimes you just have to let go and forgive. But , like you said ….it’s hard to fully gain back trust. May be best to keep the secret ….so you don’t hurt the other person and jeopardize your relationship. The idea for this poem is from a series on Hulu with Nicola Walker called, THE SPLIT!
It gave me a lot to think about!
