AN AWESOME LIFE

Hard to watch you suffer
Feel so helpless and afraid
Stand beside your bedside
Watch you slowly slip away.

Talk of your cremation
Your ashes in a jar
Don’t want to think about it
All of this is too bizarre.

A man of such great stature
With such an interesting background
All the marvelous undertakings
You have certainly been around.

All the famous, the notorious
The rich, the good, the bad
The memories to cherish
Of the awesome life you’ve had.

Rubbing elbows with the in crowd
Keeping secrets …. more or less
Making conversation
With the worst and very best.

All the years we’ve been together
The best love I’ve ever known
Can’t imagine life without you
I don’t want to be alone.

What we have together
The bond between us two
Is something  rare and special
Can’t imagine losing you.

The morphine given prn
An attempt to stop the pain
A comatose existence
Such a sad and brutal shame.

So surreal, so cold, so sterile
IV lines, and EKG’s
All the noise abruptly silenced
Now turned off, we wait and see.
