When you’re told that you have cancer
The devastation is unimaginable
You want to run, you want to hide
How could this all be possible?
Why me ? The question lingers
This isn’t fair, it isn’t right
Unable to sleep, thoughts plaque your mind
They keep you up at night.
You eat right, and you exercise
Take vitamins everyday
You try and live a good life
You balance family , work and play.
You hope that you’ll be different
You hope against all odds
Down on your knees, alone at night
You reach out and pray to God.
Sure they’ll be well wishers
They’ll say that you’ll be fine
Offer reassurance
They are trying to be kind.
But, the surgery and chemotherapy
Will be a lot for you to do
Maybe radiation
Before … they’re through with you.
A journey you must travel
You’ll go through it …. on your own
Someone can offer words of hope
But, you’ll still feel so all alone.
Money, fame or education
Will not change your diagnosis
You’ll be one of many waiting
For the doctor’s next prognosis.
One could be your next door neighbor
Or a nurse from urgent care
A roofer or a carpenter
Like you…. they all feel scared.
There are scarves and wigs available
It’s only temporary
It will grow back, it always does
Once you finish chemotherapy.
Can’t let depression overwhelm you
There’s a lot you need to do
It’s a fight against those cancer cells
Who have a hold on you.
New medications are available
Innovative and brand new
Your state of mind is everything
It will help to pull you through.
Stay focused, check the internet
Follow trials the doctors do
Miracles are happening everyday
God will take care of you.
