MY MISTAKE

Met for a drink
We spent some time
Both wanting more
Than peace of mind.

The very least
A sense of closure
You said to me
This isn’t over.

A few cocktails
The lights were low
Not thinking straight
You said, “let’s go”.

So into you
Could not resist
Wanted more
Much more than this.

Two blocks away
You lived close by
The plan to give it
One more try.

Gave into you
Took off my clothes
I stayed the night
I didn’t know.

You were asleep
When I got dressed
My hair disheveled
I was a mess.

Occurred to me
What did I do?
You weren’t alone
She lived there, too.

A photograph
Of you together
Above the frame
It said, FOREVER.

Her clothes, her shoes
In your apartment
I didn’t know
Now so disheartened.

My mistake
I should have known
I thought for sure
You lived alone.
