IT’S NOT EASY

She moves slowly, she can’t help it
Her mind and body …. not in sync
Her memory …. so often falters
She needs time, some time to think.

Can’t recall a name or number
Thoughts slowly slip away
Conversations aren’t so easy
Forgets what she’s about to say.

She needs patience and compassion
Some love and empathy
Take the time to be there for her
Give her care, some sympathy.

Can’t imagine turning 80
Facing your mortality
Knowing that your days are numbered
Is a  harsh reality.

She’s unsteady, some days off balance
When she stands and tries to walk
Sometimes, she needs assistance
Not a lecture or backtalk.

Reassure her, be there for her
Don’t make her feel alone
It’s not easy, she is lonely
Facing each day on her own.

  1. I haven’t turned 80 yet … 75 soon, though, and this poem is me … I can relate to every single word and thought! I’m very lucky to live with my daughter and granddaughter, both of whom keep me from feeling alone or being lonely.
