I think I heard the doorbell 
Oh no … who could it be?
I’m not dressed, I need a shower 
Go away, don’t bother me. 

In a panic, I start to worry
I look between the blinds
Whose car is that ?  …. I wonder 
I need to check the time. 

My door is locked, thank goodness
Should I call …. call 911?
It’s late, almost 8:30
Not expecting anyone. 

Could it be a serial killer?
A rapist or a thief?
Hoping he’s not looking for
Someone who looks like me. 

My camera isn’t working 
It needs new batteries
The porch light’s out, it’s too dark
It’s hard for me to see. 

Saw someone wearing a ball cap
He got back into his car
Looked like a guy I met last week
Down at the local bar. 

How’d he know where I lived?
Should I call the local Sheriff?
Do you think I am in danger?
I think his name was JARED..

In the morning on the porch 
Was a note, an explanation
“Left your sweater at the bar
Down at LOGANS …. near the station.

Here’s my name and number
If you’d like to meet for coffee
Maybe dinner or a movie
You can text or you can call me.”

What’s up with these apartments?
Hard to find a place to live
So many strict requirements 
Guess that’s just the way it is. 

Utilities and water
Your  responsibility 
No extra perks or prizes
Nothing complimentary.

Who makes that kind of money?
I am only twenty two
Newly out of college
What am I supposed to do?

Gonna need  to get a roommate
Gotta hope she’ll pay her share
Praying she can pull her weight 
And doesn’t mind the stairs.

Price gouging, it’s a nightmare
They do a background check 
Review all your financials
Provided per request.

With thirty applications
Doubt they’re going  to rent to me
Fingers crossed, soon we’ll know
If it is meant to be.

If not… maybe… it was my age
Race or sexual orientation
They’re not supposed to tell you why
For fear of litigation.

All you can do is look around
For a one bedroom or two
Maybe just a studio
At this point …. that would do.

I walk into a room
But, I can’t remember why
I go out and come back in

Guess it wasn’t that important
Then it hits me….. My laptop!
Surprised that I remembered

Gotta write it down on paper
Or for sure I will forget
Things are getting foggy
I just need to clear my head.

Wish that I could still remember
Names of actors on TV
The movies I’ve already seen
Now seem brand new to me. 

When I try to tell a story 
It’s like playing hide and seek
I try and find the missing words 
Somewhere inside of me.

I could  take some medication
There’s the one that’s on TV
Can’t remember what they called it
Think it started with a “ P”. 

Guess I’m living with dementia
A sign of getting old
I’ve got to try and fight it
That’s my plan …. yes, that’s  my goal.

I’d say, you’re  five foot eight
Had to know I’d learn the truth
Once we went on a date. 

 What else have you been hiding?
You should have told the truth 
You knew that I would find out
Once I laid eyes on you.

Does this mean you’re not related
To Brad Pitt or Bradley Cooper?
Was that just another lie
Just another “on line” blooper?

Are you sure that you’re not married?
Are you cheating on your wife?
Do you have your own apartment?
I’m not sure if you’re my type. 

Told me you worked at NASA
You had seen the moon up close
Was that a fabrication?
Just another silly joke?

I have to tell you honestly
You seem like a nice guy
But, can I simply overlook
The fact that you have lied? 

How about we start all over?
Can you tell me truthfully?
How tall you are, what you do?
This time don’t lie to me. 

It’s not easy meeting someone
We have fears, concerns and doubts
We just want someone who’ll like us
That’s what it’s all about.

I was played,  yeah…. I was conned
Thought you’d never leave me
But you did..you left, you’re gone. 

Shattered glass all around me
Broken pieces on the floor

Trauma bound, paralyzed

Plagued with doubt ….. anxiety
Sadness, blame …. remorse 
Can’t come to terms, see the truth

Friday night clubbing
Out until three
There with the girls 
They invited me.

Martinis with olives
Short skirts and midriffs
Hi heels with small purses
Accent on our hips. 

Guys at the bar
Drinking beer with their friends
Same as last week 
They’ve come back again.

My hair and my make up
Tastefully done
Doing my best 
To smile and have fun.

My friends are so happy 
They have everything
Three are engaged
Always flashing their bling. 

One just got married
Her husband’s away
Said she was happy
To see us today.

I look in the mirror
What’s wrong with me?
I’ll go home alone
That’s how it will be.

Tried dating “on line”
A few times here and there
No one really special
No one really cares. 

Too short or too tall
Not all are employed
Time spent at the gym
Pumped up on steroids. 

Need a nice guy
No games and no lies
You’d be surprised 
How hard I have tried. 

Maybe the nightlife
Isn’t the way
Half of these guys
Probably married or gay.
