SHOW MERCY

2,000 migrant children
Being held against their will
No guardian or parent
Told, “ be quiet and be still!”

Terrified and frightened
No one seems to care
Taken from their mother’s arms
None of this is fair.

Fleeing from oppression
Threats of death and poverty
Thought that they’d be welcomed
In the land of liberty.

“Please tell me, where my mother is
She was shackled and handcuffed
Please let us be together
What will become of us?

Don’t send her back…. without me
I don’t want to be alone
I need to find my mother
Please don’t send her home.

There are vicious men there waiting
They have guns and they have knives
They were going to kill us
We had to flee to save our lives.

Won’t you please show us some mercy
Please don’t lock the gate
Help me find my mother
Before, it is too late”.

THRU THE CRACKS

Coming unglued
Falling apart
Like Humpty Dumpty
Don’t know where to start.

Too many pieces
Scattered around
Though I have tried
Will never be found.

Too close to the brink
Out on the ledge
Too close for comfort
Too close to the edge.

Worn, torn and shattered
My heart on the shelf
Waiting for someone
To come and to help.

Thought if I waited
Just long enough
You might come back
But, you gave us up.

Days into nights
Weeks into years
I’m helplessly waiting
Still waiting here.

But, too many pieces
To try and put back
No way to recover
What fell thru the cracks.

A COWARD AND A BULLY

You’re inciting violence
With your vile and hateful speech
You set the stage, give the green light
You should be impeached.

Spewing hate by encouraging
Anger and unabashed chaos
You’re not happy unless you see
The disparity you’re causing among us.

You’re a coward and a bully
It’s all you’ll ever be
So sad, your base follows blindly
Just too ignorant to see.

Resentment, hate and jealousy
Bait used to inspire their allegiance
To a cold hearted psychopath
Whose values are egregious.

At forty percent, you do stand a chance
Of destroying our democracy
With every action that you take
In your quest for autocracy.

But, the legal means in Mueller’s hands
As he continues his investigation
Along with our social outcries
Will lead to your incarceration.

Lining their pockets, securing their place
In congress and in the senate
Your cronies cavort with lobbyists
And your choice of special interest.

But, who has the courage to stand up to you?
Who’ll risk their political career?
They won’t be alone, when they do
Your demise will come, it’s near.

A TIPPING OF THE SCALES

The judges in their black robes
Stand poised to make a change
The democrats will lose their place
Things won’t remain the same.

The right to safe abortion
Will disappear before your eyes
Coat hangers and alleyways
Are soon to be revived.

They’ll be no same sex marriages
All we’ve worked for …soon dissolved
The scales are tipped, don’t be fooled
They’ll be no fair resolve.

The direction that we’re taking
So frightening, so unfair
A disregard for human rights
They really just don’t care.

They’re chafing at the bit
To reverse existing laws
To take away our rights
It soon will be their call.

Please tell me how this happened
We’re about to be set back
We’ll have to start all over
We are now under attack.

Years of strife and years of protests
Standing up for what is right
The narrow minded bigots
Are about to win this fight.

The moral fiber of our nation
Is being cut, turned into shreds
Everything we stand for
Is now under constant threat.

They say good wins over evil
But I’m afraid this isn’t true
Everything’s turned upside down
What are we to do?

KIDNAPPED

Detained and incarcerated
Held against their will
Taken from their mother’s arms
Told to sit down and be still.

Placed in shackles, put in handcuffs
With tears falling from their eyes
“Please don’t take my children”
No time to say good bye.

Children bused and transported
Taken thousands of miles away
Mother’s frantic…begging and pleading
All they can do now is pray.

No registry, no plan in place
To track the children’s whereabouts
No regard for life and human rights
What is this process all about?

Governed by a ruthless man
Without a conscience or a heart
Taking children from their mother’s arms
Tearing families apart.

Families lawfully seeking asylum
Are being deported, sent on their way
Their children kidnapped by our government
Then taken so far away.

Put in jail without due process
Parents held against their will
Doubt they’ll be reunited
I doubt they ever will.

Guilty of abuse and kidnappingn
Our president should be charged
He’s committed these atrocities
He’s a criminal at large.

What can we do to get them back?
The nation is protesting
How are they getting away with this?
They’re heartless, simply disgusting.

He’s got to be charged and impeached
He needs to be held accountable
When will the republicans stand up to him?
This behavior is cruel and unconscionable.

THAT SUMMER

We spent several days
Looking for the carriage wheels
Traded baseball cards and gum
Till we finally made a deal.

Four baby carriage wheels
A treasure, what a find
Some boards and some nails
Some rope from a clothesline.

We found a wooden box
Attached a board down the center
We put a pillow on the seat
To avoid getting a splinter.

When we were finally done
We took it for a ride
There was room for only one
To fit comfortably inside.

We drew straws, I drove it first
It was like a Cadillac
I felt the wind upon my face
I drove it twice… straight down the track.

It was like a dream come true
I felt delighted, so elated
Was the best day of my life
I was feeling so excited.

We kept it in my dad’s garage
Couldn’t wait for the next day
We were all so thrilled and happy
Couldn’t wait to go out to play.

Kids from the other block
Came around to see our car
They came from two blocks over
They came from near and far.

We charged a nickel for a ride
One pass down our hillside track
They were so impressed
They kept coming back.

That summer was my best
The memories will last forever
We had so much fun
So much fun playing together.

A BLUE WAVE

We need to have a blue wave
A flood of voters at the polls
Stopping Trump and his pack
Come together, achieve our goal.

Emoluments and treason
He needs to be impeached
Lying, stealing, and cheating
Worse than you can ever believe.

Unending obstruction of justice
He is totally out of control
He has no concept of honor
He has a dark and empty soul.

Stop the deportations
They have rights as immigrants
Once they set foot on our soil
It’s not the end of it.

He cannot simply deport them
Not just because, without due process
No comprehension of the Constitution
They have a right to live here with us.

We must come together
Stop this vile and evil man
Put him into prison
We’ve got to take a stand.

YOUR INNER VOICE

You’re walking or you’re running
You push and then you press
You’re doing everything you can
You try your very best.

Nutritious meals of substance
Drinks that promise energy
Treadmill in the morning
Afternoons of pilates.

Chest press, pull – ups, dips galore
Planks, step-ups and lots of crunches
Nothing more that you can do
Short of giving up those lunches.

Lunch with clients and customers
Begin with wine and starters
Salad bars with lots of cheese
Too much pasta and salty crackers.

Carbo loaded entrees
Clog your veins and arteries
But, you’re considered anti-social
If you say, “that’s not for me”.

A glass of wine or water
Gives you a healthy choice
Don’t lose your daily focus
Listen to your inner voice.

I NEED TO FIND MY MOTHER

We walked 30 miles a day
It was so unbearably hot
I begged my mother to let us rest
She said, “No, we cannot stop!”

The cartel’s lurking everywhere
We were robbed, they took her bracelet
She hid what little money she had
Afraid they’d try and take it.

So little food, a jug of water
We made it to the border
Who knew that we weren’t welcome here
That they would take my mother.

I cried and begged, I pleaded with
The guards in uniforms
Please don’t take my mother
We were treated with such scorn.

Don’t know where my mother is now
Don’t know just where I am
They put me in a cage at first
Two days later….in a van.

We drove for several days
I couldn’t tell in what direction
We ate lunch from a paper bag
Made rest stops at a gas station.

Not alone, there were other boys
We were frightened, really scared
No idea where our parents were
No one asked, they didn’t dare.

Once we arrived, they took us inside
There were other children on the floor
Some were crying, they looked so sad
I wanted to run right out the door.

I thought America was the home of the free
We had traveled so far to get here
Now it was obvious to me
We weren’t wanted by anyone…anywhere.

I didn’t know what was happening
I just wanted to be with my mother
Some children were crying out
One boy kept asking for his brother.

I saw babies at the border gate
They were taken right out of their mother‘s arms
I was praying for my mother’s safety
Praying she was alive and wouldn’t be harmed.

We had heard about your new president
Heard he was making America great
What is going to happen to me?
Is there any chance I can escape?

I need to find my mother
But, I’ve been taken so far away
I have no idea where she is
All I can do now is pray.

ZERO TOLERANCE

We have a devil in our midst
Devoid of conscience and of shame
Things are far worse than you know
Far worse… than what they seem.

Children taken from their mothers
With no plan for their return
Taken at the border
Their whereabouts… we’ve yet to learn.

Reporters and officials
Senators from different states
Told that they can’t enter
Stopped at the door, stopped at the gate.

What is it they are hiding?
These kids are sleeping on the floor
Locked in cages like animals
Abused, kidnapped and ignored.

Given foil blankets and a pillow
Considered all they deserve or need
Not holding him accountable
For his ignorance and greed.

Cruel and inhumane
Barbaric and filled with hate
All to foster his agenda
To make America great.

He’s destroying our proud nation
No regard for human rights
His zero tolerance policy
Separates the brown from white.

He’s a racist and a bigot
A narcissistic psychopath
He stands before us smiling
With arms crossed he starts to laugh.

We need to save the children
This is a democracy
We’ve got to stop the cruelty
We’ve got to set them free.
