It happened without warning
I saw her standing there
I couldn’t help myself
I knew that I still cared.
Our paths crossed … perhaps by chance
Was it fate or a coincidence?
We parted ways… some years ago
Think we met today…. by accident.
She said , “HELLO” so casually
Like the spider to the fly
As always, oh so charming
Her eyes… blue as the sky’s.
She put her arms around me
How could I resist?
Softly whispered in my ear
I’ve missed the way you kiss.
Why don’t you come home with me?
She wanted to have sex
It’s been so long, I’ve missed you
Thought that I would just say, yes!
No way that I would follow her
Like I did before
Never again …. would I give in
Not ever, not anymore.
Persuasion has its limits
I’d been down the rabbit hole
Been there… done that…. no not today
No chance that I would fold.
Handed me her business card
Told me to call her later
I knew that she had no idea
I’d spent years …. wanting to hate her.
A psychopath, a narcissist
She hadn’t changed a bit
Some people learn from past mistakes.
Some want no part of it.

Don’t know who you can trust
Keep your business quiet
Don’t try and make a fuss.
Food and drugs are rationed
Health care is not assured
Measles running rampant
Polio …. no longer cured.
A rather sad prediction
Hope none of this comes true
But Trump and all his sycophants
Don’t have concern for you.

Everyday’s the same
Can’t shake this sense of loneliness

Suffocating, still immersed
In dreams that didn’t last.
Once fierce, so strong, could rise above
Whatever came my way
Now a weak link, floundering
Can’t seem to seize the day.
Wallowing in sadness,
Regretting things I’ve done
Too much time on my hands
I’m blocking out the sun.
Need to find rejuvenation
A purpose, a goal, a plan
Once a fearless warrior
Now sinking in quicksand.
Tired of the repetition
This cloud above my head
Everyday gets harder
Harder to get out of bed.
Try to read the paper
Turn on the nightly news
The recaps are terrifying
We have so much to lose.
A hard shake, a slap in the face
My problems so miniscule
Need to focus on something more
Like the cost of rocket fuel.
Children are starving while I am whining
About my state of mind
More important things to address
Than these frivolous problems of mine.

After Customs to the gate
Once on the plane, I can relax
That’s when I’ll know …. I’m safe.
