NO SECOND THOUGHTS

Why did you have to lie?
You made me believe
You said those words out loud
Made promises to me.

I gave you all I had
I compromised my soul
I followed you to hell and back
Believed what I was told.

You grew bored so quickly
I was not enough
I thought that we had everything
That we were so in love.

So foolish, and so trusting
You left me high and dry
I sit here crying senselessly
You left, you said… goodbye.

No second thoughts, no chances
It was over, no regrets
When you decide that you’re done
So easily you’ll forget.

The promises, the plans we made
You said it was forever
How many have you told that to
When you’re alone together?

Confused by lust and passion
Mesmerized and charmed
I followed you so willingly
No need to twist my arm.

A method to your madness
A well executed plan
Has left me broken-hearted
Guess I’ll never understand.

ALONG THE BEACH

I took off my shoes and jacket
Felt the sand beneath my feet
Walked about a mile due south
The sights beyond belief.

The seagulls flying overhead
The boats not far from shore
The waves against the sandy beach
The quiet, peaceful roar.

The salty mist, the ocean air
The sun setting in the distance
A picture perfect evening
I closed my eyes, I tried to listen.

The bell sounds from the lighthouse
Every evening at this time
The familiar chant now echoes
Its song, a gentle rhyme.

The light blinking on the buoy
Channel markers lead the way
The sailors chart and navigate
Their boats into the bay.

The lobster and the shrimp boats
Make ready, leave at dawn
By 5 a.m. they’re on their way
Their days are hard and long.

The wind picks up, time to go
The rain is coming soon
I make my way up the hill
Just passed the sandy dunes.

DON’T SETTLE

Step into the light
Away from the darkness
Step back from the hatred
Don’t stand with the heartless.

Too many face fear
Each day, everyday
They’re tortured, they’re scorned
They’re such easy prey.

There’s evil, destruction
Slavery and confinement
When will we be free
To escape this harsh climate.

The false prophets that lead
Promote fear and blame
We must vote them out
Or, have more of the same.

Break free of the ties
That bind and oppress
Check your moral compass
Don’t settle for less.

HEARTACHE

Enthralled and enticed
Enamored and lured
Knew what you were doing
So driven, so sure.

Your charm and embrace
Put me under your spell
The moment I saw you
It was clear, I could tell.

There was no one else
That could touch me the way
The way that you did
On that very first day.

It all happened so fast
No time to consider
The damage was done
The cost …cold and bitter.

The wreckage, upheaval
That was left in your wake
The pain and the torment
The tears, the heartache.

My vision obscured
By lust and desire
Overtaken, consumed
By a raging wildfire.

EARNEST

A weekend away
Remembering you
You were so handsome
My dream has come true.

Your house, a museum
I toured it six times
Hoping your spirit
Might connect with mine.

Cats with six toes
And the chandeliers
Brought in from Paris
Maintained through the years.

Your studio there
Just up the stairs
Your typewriter quiet
Wish you were still there.

Your pictures and stories
Told time and again
Related encounters
Your crimes and your sins.

The drinking, the bars
The trips far from home
The women who loved you
Couldn’t leave you alone.

Adventure and risk
You were so bold
So charming, alluring
Like the stories you told.

Your life filled with passion
You wasted no time
Inscribing your thoughts
Losing you…. such a crime.

MY MUSTER & MY MOJO

The lights turned off at ten
Still I wake up a sluggish mess
No alcohol or sleep aids
Why don’t I feel refreshed?

So hard to wake, get moving
The dog needs to be fed
But, I would rather stay right here
Than get out of this warm bed.

Why can’t I find my Mojo?
What has become of him?
I should be on the treadmill
I should be at the gym.

I guess I’m getting older
My bones are tired and weak
Hard to find my Muster
When he’s playing “hide n seek”.

My Muster and My Mojo
What’s become of you?
I’m feeling quite abandoned
Just don’t know what to do.

Help me to feel more energized
Help me to find a way
Give me the boost that I need
Help me begin my day.

TAKE THE TIME

She walked bent over and unsteady
Her gait had somewhat slowed
The years had now passed her by
She had nowhere to go.

Her groceries were being delivered
She no longer needed a car
Her apartment was cleaned by a service
She never wandered off very far.

She napped in her chair every afternoon
She sat by herself all alone
No one stopped by unexpectedly
Although she was usually home.

Her husband had died five years earlier
They were married over fifty plus years
She still set the table for both of them
How she wished that he was still here.

Her children grown with kids of their own
Lived too far away from the city
They did come to visit on holidays
Couldn’t stay too long, they were busy.

She got a ride once a week to “Game Night”
They played Canasta, Poker or Hearts
She liked playing Dominoes best though
She liked that… much better than cards.

She lost two of her friends last summer
One was eighty and one ninety-five
She wasn’t able to go to their funerals
She wasn’t able to tell them Goodbye.

It wasn’t easy living alone now
She struggled to face each new day
But she had faith and all of her memories
They helped chase the sadness away.

No one knows the heartbreak of aging
Until you find yourself there on your own
It’s hard to get by… when your strength’s nearly gone
It’s hard to live by yourself, all alone.

Think twice… if you know someone’s hurting
Reach out and lend them a hand
Take the time to sit and chat just a bit
Show them that you do understand.

A cup of tea and pleasant conversation
Can mean more than you’ll ever know
Sit for awhile and be patient
Don’t be in such a hurry to go.

Before you know it, it’s going to be your turn
You’ll be sitting all alone in your chair
You’ll hope that someone just like you
Will be there because somebody cares.

IN MY DREAMS

Take me on an outing
Let me feel the soft, cool breeze
Let me feel the sunshine
So warm upon my knees.

As I sit beside the oak tree
I watch the squirrels that scamper by
Looking for their morning meal
Beneath the bright blue sky.

My days at best are numbered
My memories of you
Have left my life encumbered
Not knowing what to do.

I sit and I remember
The time I had with you
But, you were taken all too soon
Now, I sit here sad and blue.

My days are long and quiet
I read, I sleep, I rest
I take a nap in the afternoon
Some say I’m truly blessed.

But, soon I’ll leave this life I’ve known
I’ll close my eyes and drift away
Hoping to get to see you
In my dreams, I hope, I pray.

BECOME A BETTER YOU

Spearheading a new notion
That simply might catch on
To give to those less fortunate
Who feel they don’t belong.

Thinking about others
Who are in need of help
It’s not always about you
Help someone other than yourself.

Some spend their days alone and sad
There’s nothing they can do
No one to lend a hand
No one they can talk to.

We so often take for granted
The blessings of each day
We need to show our gratitude
Take the time, to find a way.

Reach out and help somebody
Do whatever you can do
To help to ease their burden
Become a better you.
