HEARTLESS

Brutal and vicious
The harm we inflict
Callous and cruel
We lay it on thick.

The smiles and the grins
When someone is suffering
We’ve mastered the tools
There is no recovering.

With deadly force
And a battery ramp
We slam it on home
Lick the final stamp.

What causes the chaos?
What promotes the fear?
How could we  ignore you
Ignore all your tears?

Heartless and cold
Knocked to the ground
Stepped over, stepped on
We’ll push you right down.

No kindness or love
We’ve learned to hate
We build our walls high
To make America great.

SNOWFALL AT CHRISTMAS

The howling wind
The blanketing snow
Impassable roads
With nowhere to go.

The blazing fire
The crimson glow
The warmth of coffee
The drifts below.

Nature’s storm
Fierce and cold
The lake now frozen
The storm so bold.

Nary a traveler
Sets out alone
To battle the winds
For they’re safer at home.

The animals sheltered
Now huddled together
No chance you will find
Any out in this weather.

Through the night
We’ll hear the wind
The storm now passed
The day begins.

The deer now brazen
Looking for berries
Those ice covered morsels
In snow …. some are buried.

The ice on the branches
Weighs heavy with snow
They glisten and sparkle
As the wind gently blows.

Christmas is coming
Santa will find his way
Through the night he will travel
With his reindeer and sleighs.

THE RICH GET RICHER

A bonus, a discount
Is not meant for you
They’re given to the rich
Who are never past due.

No rights and no cuts
No benefits in kind
Nothing gets shared
To those left behind.

Paycheck to paycheck
At minimum wage
No chance to break even
Not a cent left to save.

Where is the incentive?
You muddle along
You work 40  hours
Your struggle prolonged.

The rich get richer
The poor left behind
The middle class flounder
Still waiting in line.

INTO THE ABYSS

Pinpricks and stabbings
Needles and tracks
Shoved into your arm
Broke your mother’s back.

Salt over the shoulder
Poured into your wounds
Too much to endure
You gave up too soon.

We watch while you falter
We watch from afar
The powder, the candy
The ones that leave scars.

Slipping and slidding
Into the abyss
Wondering why
You couldn’t resist.

With hands in the air
You circle the drain
There’s just no way out
From the depths of your pain.

CONSUMED

Unsettled, uncertain
Confused and withdrawn
Where is my drive?
My purpose is gone.

Floundering aimlessly
Floating adrift
My rudder forsaken
I can’t explain it.

Down on my luck
Down on my knees
Feeling so hopeless
So ill at ease.

What can I do
To get it all back?
I can’t get a grip
I’ve fallen off track.

Walking in circles
With no clarity
Can’t feel the rhythm
It’s been taken from me.

Stolen, kidnapped
I’m being held hostage
I’d gladly pay up
Please release me from bondage.

The rope round my neck
Like the air in this room
I can’t catch my breath
So completely consumed.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

There is no place
That fits you just right
A place to call home
Where you’ll spend  your nights.

A gypsy, a wanderer
You just don’t fit in
Feels good for awhile
But, the fun always ends.

You pack up, you leave
Your worries behind
But, somehow they follow
Still there in your mind.

The mountains, the shore
The desert, the lakes
You do what you can
Whatever it takes.

Out and about
You feel on the edge
Never fully accepted
Is it all in your head?

You thrive on the change
You’re looking for more
You never know… what
The trip has in store.

You long for a garden
A mountain to climb
Somewhere to call home
Where you’ll spend all your time.

ON THE BEACH

The night was cold
The wind had died down
I was alone on the beach
No one else was around.

The sound of the waves
The tide coming in
They continue, no let up
Again and again.

A constant, assurance
You can depend on
Never changing  direction
Always there, all along.

The journey,  the hardships
The pain and the grief
I now sit by myself
I don’t want to leave.

We mourn what we’ve  lost
We feel so alone
I don’t want to go back
There’s no one at home.

STARTING OVER

I need to level up
To leave some things behind
I need to start all over
I’m wasting too much time.

I’ve sat around too long
Not getting anywhere
I’m treading water all alone
Can’t get from here to there.

My wheels need to be turning
Not spinning on the ground
Keeping me in one place
I need to move around.

A short reprieve to generate
A new source of energy
A chance to start all over
Reset my boundaries.

My Mojo’s been in hiding
Submerged and out of sight
Hidden beneath my doubts and fears
But,  it’s time to make things right.

A new start is what is needed
A new project  for me to do
A reason to get up each day
A day to start anew.

A MADMAN

A madman unleashed
No restraints hold him back
He’s threatened our allies
We are under attack.

Put down your checkbooks
Forget your accounts
There’s a lot more to lose
He must be renounced.

His crude, vile behavior
An embarrassment to all
He’s cavorting with dictators
His empire must fall.

He’s lifting the sanctions
On Russia despite
The advice from the generals
Who know it’s not right.

He’s shut down our government
To  get his wall built
He’s playing with fire
Doesn’t care who gets killed.

Impeach and imprison
We don’t need a wall
He needs to be stopped
Once and for all.

OUT OF CONTROL

You’re spiraling completely
Out of Control
I’ve heard the excuses
The story gets old.

A sense of entitlement
That hasn’t been earned
Poor behavior accepted
Simply what you have learned.

Always the same
The same sad results
It couldn’t be you
It’s never your fault.

So many chances
Have passed you on by
You can’t face the truth
It’s too easy to lie.

If it takes effort
We can’t count on you
You’re just too busy
Always something to do.

The time quickly passes
Soon you’ll be alone
No safety net waiting
No one will be home.
