AN ADVENTURE

Scattered thunder showers
Raindrops begin to fall
Filling up the puddles
Running down the crumbled walls.

Don’t forget your umbrella
Or those shiny rubber boots
Your raincoat or your hoody
Hope your clothes are waterproof.

The lakes and all the rivers
Slowly start to rise
Too much water in your garden
And the shallow plants will die.

It’s always feast or famine
You have more or you have less
Hard to make predictions
Sometimes better just to guess.

The rain has stopped, the sun is out
Let’s spend the day outside
Let’ go out to the country
Let’s go…. let’s take a ride.

Water slides and waterfalls
A perfect summer day
A hike into the forest
Such a magical getaway.

Why not go skinny dipping?
There’s no one else around
Take off your shoes, your overalls
Just lay them on the ground.

The water cold….. refreshing
Clear and deep … it’s so pristine
You could see right to the bottom
It was amazingly …. so clean.

A frog nearby kept watch on us
Not sure that we belonged
Sitting on a nearby log
Hoping soon we would be gone.

Time to go, it’s getting late
The sun is going down
Time to start the drive toward home
Make our way on back to town.

What started as a rainy day
Turned into an adventure
With lots of laughs and lots of fun
A memory to treasure.

TRACKS

You sit and drink your coffee
Watch the birds thru the screen door
You can hear them chirping loudly
Your feet cold… upon the floor.

Your husband brings your slippers
Sets them down and you both smile
There is warmth between the two of you
You’ve been sweethearts a long while.

The children have all left…they’re gone
Their rooms quiet and now empty
They’ve grown up …. off on their own
All that’s left are just the memories.

He now leaves … goes to the office
It’s so quiet with him gone
You long to find your purpose
But you’re feeling so alone.

Time has passed you by… too quickly
You remember their first steps
The contests that they won and lost
The passed and failed math tests.

Wait…. there’s his truck parked in the driveway. For some reason he’s come back
Says, “Look what I found abandoned
In a box…. down by the tracks”.

In his arms he holds a puppy
“He was left there all alone
He won’t be any trouble
I’ll take him out when I get home.”

The afternoons have gotten busy
With walks down to the park
Playing in the backyard
Chasing squirrels till it gets dark.

We couldn’t think of what to call him
Thought “Tracks” was a good name
Since he’s now part of the family
Things will never be the same.

A KNOCK ON THE DOOR

House to house and door to door
What is it you are looking for?
A signature, a smiling face?
You make your way from place to place.

Some neighborhoods may look run down
You think that no one is around
But, suddenly a door will open
You cross your fingers and start hoping.

Will they be cooperative?
Sign and date your narrative?
Vote by mail and registrations
Support your cause, no hesitations?

Surprisingly they sign the form
They reach out now…to touch your arm
They thank you for your dedication
The work you do to save our nation.

When they agree to volunteer
Can’t help yourself, you’re brought to tears
Your faith in humanity … restored
You want to knock on every door.

You fill out forms, you pass out cards
Getting pledges is not so hard.
You verify their cell phone number
It starts to rain, you hear the thunder.

The temperature, so blistering hot
A few more doors you need to knock
You have to tell them all the facts
Though sweat is running down your back.

Time to go, it’s time to sleep
Rest those tired and weary feet.
The rain comes down, though soaking wet
This was a day you won’t forget.

FEELING BLUE

Sneaking round behind my back
So surprised at you
Avoidance and deception
The first of many clues.

Loyalty just doesn’t count
“All is fair in love and war”
Guess that pertains to friendships, too
Sadly, I expected more.

Too much hurt , too much pain
You did all that you could
Don’t have faith they will act
Exactly as they should.

They will take and not look back
Isn’t that the name of the game?
Get what you can, when you can
No one remembers your name.

It’s not …what you have done for me
More like, grab it while you can
Hurt feelings a mere casualty
They will never understand.

It’s best to learn to be alone
Sorry… no one’s home
Lick your wounds, take to the bed
Their hearts are made of stone.

Don’t bang your drum, don’t shout so loud
It will fall upon deaf ears
No one’s really listening
No one there to wipe your tears.

Toughen up, stand on your own
Learn to be all by yourself
No one will be standing there
Stop looking for their help.

Whine, whine…they don’t care
In one ear and out the other
Don’t waste your time reiterating
They’ve moved on, they’re with another.

Someone they relate to
Sorry, that someone isn’t you
Take the hint, take a hike
Get over feeling blue.

LIGHT YEARS AWAY ( Song)

The space between us
Grows wider each day
I try to ignore it
Hoping it goes away.

But, the bridge has collapsed
The lines have come down
There’s no way to reach you
No path to be found.

The wall has been built
With more than one brick
It was built over time
And, the barrier’s thick.

How can I tell you?
I can’t get it back
I’m losing direction
My train’s off the track.

We’ve run aground
Like a ship with no rudder
Hopeless and lost
We can’t talk to each other.

I lie in bed
I hear you breathe
But, one foot away
From all that I need.

Yet, I can’t convey
The needs that I have
For fear that you’ll leave
For fear that you’ll laugh.

Day after day
We go thru the motions
We keep to ourselves
The words never spoken.

A MONSTER UNDER THE BED

There appears to be a monster
In my room…. under the bed
My parents don’t believe me
He’s from a book, one that I read.

He seems to be invisible
Anytime they’re in my room
I know that once they close the door
He’ll be back with me real soon.

He’s a friendly kind of monster
But he looks quite frightening
His hair is orange, his teeth are sharp
His eyes are emerald green.

He’s a lighter shade of purple
He has thick, dark, shiny fur
When he begins to fall asleep
I sometimes hear him purr.

His ears are big and pointy
His tail, not very long
He likes to play games with me
And sings my favorite songs.

His feet are big and furry
His hands like a cat’s paws
He has whiskers on his face
And like my kitty, he has claws.

He likes to be called “Robert”
Has no children of his own
Said he came to live with me
So I’d never be alone.

Guess I’m pretty lucky
The luckiest kid of all
My monster is quite friendly
He doesn’t bite, or scratch, or claw.

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND DREAM

Close your eyes and dream
Cast your fears aside
Don’t waste the day….be happy
No reason you should cry.

Let the magic of this moment
Carry you away
To a land above the shadows
Where the clouds are white, not gray.

Smell the flowers, their sweet fragrance
Fill your mind with pleasantries
Thoughts of all your loved ones
Enjoy the memories.

Time wasted …can’t be counted
When you look back over time
Don’t let it get inside your head
Take heed and watch the signs.

The could’a , should’a, woulda ’s
Are mere mishaps, let them go
Don’ t pine, don’t let them linger
Cast your eyes on the rainbow.

Have faith and hope for tomorrow
Try to find a better way
Cast aside all of your heartache
Savior each and everyday.

A SCARY STORM

The crackling thunder
The lightning streaks
My dog comes a running
She’s afraid, starts to freak.

I hold her, I rock her
Try to calm the girl down
She clearly is scared
She’s afraid of the sounds.

The rain on the roof top
The wind howls and it wails
Scaring my puppy
No wagging her tail.

Shaking and fearful
She can’t understand
I try to assure her
Do the best that I can.

When the storm passes
We step out in the yard
The grass is now wet
My dog still is on guard.

Glad that it’s over
Now happy and free
She sits in the yard
There under the tree.

CUT ME LOOSE

There’s no walking it back
We ran out of time
Someone’s heart is broken
I’m afraid that it’s mine.

Too many stories told
Too many alibis
Too many lame excuses
Too many blatant lies.

No trust we can defer to
No safety net below
No lifeline to grab onto
So much I didn’t know.

Your charm ignites my passion
But you’re an actor thru and thru
You set the stage, you choreographed
Every scene I played with you.

I was duped, deceived and lied to
I believed the things you said
I swallowed “hook, line and sinker”
As you led me to your bed.

So innocent and vulnerable
It was never fair to me
You had a plan, you walked me thru
Cut me loose, then set me free.

THE WOODLANDS

The magical green woodlands
Home of unicorns and gnomes
A resting perch for fairies
Who call the forest home.

The gargoyles guard the entrance
Protecting one and all
The monkeys and the dragons
The tall ones and the small.

The fire flies and creepy crawlers
The caterpillars and the frogs
Live inside the tree trunks
Deep within the hollow logs.

Up above, high in the branches
Sits the owl and feathered friends
They sit and chirp the day away
From beginning to the end.

Some cover up their faces
Blinded by the moon’s soft light
Others wide eyed and bushy tailed
Bask in the bright sun light.

The moss blanketing the meadow
As soft as cotton fleece
All of the creatures gather there
When it’s time to fall asleep.

They snuggle and they cuddle
They keep each other warm
The ones with claws and pointy fangs
Protect them all from harm.
