A MEREMAID’S PLEA

As I got closer to the jetty
I couldn’t believe my eyes
There she sat upon the rocks
Was I asleep or hypnotized?

Her hair was long and flowing
Her eyes… an emerald green
Was this just my imagination
Or the middle of a dream?

Extremely sleek and beautiful
The sun glistening on her skin
She had a perfect upper body
And below ….a large green fin.

Her voice was calm and soothing
It was music to my ears
She held my hand and smiled at me
Referred to me as “Dear”.

We talked about the ocean
The creatures big and small
She worried about pollution
All the garbage and the oil.

She was a mermaid on a mission
She was pleading for my help
She spoke about the others
Never focused on herself.

Please save the whales and dolphins
All the fish and crustaceans
All the many helpless creatures
That reside in our ocean.

I couldn’t help but notice
The tears falling from her eyes
I tried to reassure her
Didn’t want to see her cry.

In time, we had to say goodbye
I knew she couldn’t stay
Underneath the water. She disappeared, then slipped away.

NORA

I sure miss Nora Ephron
Her wit and her charm
The laughter she gave us
Had taken me by storm.

Her class, such grace
Her slant on the mundane
Inspiring and amazing
Her sprit still remains.

Thru all of her books and movies
And such well written articles
I felt a true connection
So real, so palpable.

She was incredibly amazing
Loved by so many and admired
I, myself was quite enamored
I was smittened and inspired.

She was unique and captivating
She had a style all of her own
A brilliant, talented writer
That I wish that I had know.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Decisions are made
Behind closed doors
Handshakes and winks
Can’t take any more.

The rich get richer
They scam and they lie
Over and over
We keep asking why.

But the proof is there
Right in our face
Plain and simple
A sad disgrace.

They’ll use and abuse
They’ll bully, complain
But the end result
Is more of the same.

We have to stand up
To greed and to hate
If we wait too long
It will be too late.

Can’t let them take over
We can’t let them win.
We’ve got to speak out
Again and again.

SHAME ON YOU

You sit there and watch
Fox all day
You believe everything
He has to say.

You turn your back
On innocent children
You want the wall
He told you he’s building.

While you’re distracted
He’s taking away
All of your benefits
And all of your pay.

The top two percent
Are stuffing their pockets
He has plans for expansion
He’s got money for rockets.

But your check gets smaller
All your medical costs
Are soon to rise
Your rights will be lost.

Like a magician
He’s fooling you
He’s covered your eyes
He knows just what to do.

Slight of hand
Coldhearted and mean
He’s laughing at you
While fulfilling his dream.

An agent of chaos
You’re along for the ride
You can’t see thru the haze
All the hate and the lies.

Once it is over
You’ll feel so ashamed
But, you will have no one
But… yourself to blame.

FAT CAT

Get the hook
Pull him off the stage
Can’t you see
What a mess he’s made?

Look around
He’s taking us down
The world is laughing
Because of this clown.

Pulling apart
The United States
Making fools of us
All the greed and hate.

No respect
He has no shame
Takes what he wants
That’s the name of the game.

Got to step up
Take this guy down
Please come together
Please look around.

All that we stand for
All that matters
Is being destroyed
While this “fat cat” gets fatter.

Heartless and cold
No thoughts of others
Taking children away
From their grieving mothers.

Open your eyes
It’s all clear as day
He is a criminal
Gotta put him away.

THANK YOU, LONDON

My gratitude, my heartfelt thanks
To the protesters in London
For standing up to Trump
For sometimes I feel abandoned.

It’s good to know that folks like me
Are really not alone
That other countries, including yours
Wish he would go back home.

Unqualified and filled with hate
He slipped under the wire
He is merely an entertainer
An evil, disruptive liar.

He has no place in politics
It is frightening to know
That he is running our country
He simply has to go.

The lies, the cruel atrocities
He has committed while president
Are horrifying and embarrassing
They are fostering resentment.

Thank you for all of your support
For trying to step in
We stand together for freedom
We must get rid of him.

HOLD MY HAND

Walk with me, talk with me
Please hold my hand
I am afraid
And, don’t understand.

The prejudice, blame
The hateful abuse
The targeting, accusing
The opinions of few.

I try to ignore them
I turn away
I look straight ahead
I hope they won’t stay.

But they exist
They are everywhere
They look done on me
They stop and they stare.

They’re hateful and cruel
Unforgiving, unfair
They lack compassion
Because they don’t care.

Please keep me safe
I stand all alone
Afraid to go out
Afraid to leave home.

SO OVERWHELMED

I feel so overwhelmed
So totally out of touch
My thoughts and all my feelings
Don’t matter very much.

I see the world thru my eyes
They seem so different than yours
Perhaps my thoughts are compromised
Perhaps just immature.

I wander round in circles
Confused and frustrated
Everything about you
Seems to be so complicated.

You wonder why I’ve walked away
I need some peace of mind
I’ve got to find my way there
Leaving heartache far behind.

This has to end, I can’t go on
Engaged in hurtful banter
I need to find a place to go
Away from all this anger.

The love I feel, the joy I’ve known
Does not negate my feelings
But, your constant threats and outbursts
I no longer find appealing.

NURTURE OUR PLANET

Suffocating from so much waste
Dumped into our rivers and oceans
Spills of oil and petroleum products
All the tubes, the caps and the lotions.

Money made from disposing all
The chemicals and the poisons
Released into the atmosphere
Despite the pleading voices.

All the slime and all the smells
Now come from deep below
Dead fish, dead grass and creatures
They have no place to go.

Stuck in the sludge of death and decay
That’s been dropped into their laps
This was not an accident
An unintentional, mistake or mishap.

Corporate plans to ease their load
More money in their pockets
Any attempt to repair the damage
Never makes it to their docket.

Clean air and water …the staples of life
Should never be taken for granted
We share this world under one umbrella
We need to nurture and preserve our planet.

THE MOON AND THE STARS

Sparkling diamonds fill the sky
As far as the eye can see
They were placed there one by one
Positioned so carefully.

Midnight blue with specks of silver
Ignite the glistening sky
The power of the universe
Is enough to make you cry.

Off to the side, but still in view
The moon among the clouds
Now cut in half, the crescent moon
Is embarrassed by the crowd.

Intimidated by their beauty
She slips back, she turns away
Not as impressive as a sparkling star
She’s afraid of what they’d say.

Silly being frightened
The moon stands all on its own
The moon and stars should mingle
Their appearance sets the tone.

A moonlit night, the sky above
Make a wish upon a star
Look up and see the spectacle
From wherever on earth you are.

Becomes the night’s love story.
