AN ISLAND ENCOUNTER

It was a steamy, hot and humid day
I walked down to our local bar

It was only a couple of blocks from home

I didn’t need to take the car.

I ordered a beer straight from the tap
It was cold and unbelievably refreshing
I sat at a table all alone
My hair wet, I was obviously sweating.

She was wearing a long, pink polk a dot skirt
Her hair pulled away from her face
I might have seen her somewhere before
Couldn’t recall the time or place.

I asked if she’d liked to join me
We were the only customers there
I motioned for her to come over
As I attempted to pull up a chair.

The jukebox was conveniently playing
One of my all time favorite songs
I held myself back from starting to sing
But noticed she started singing along.

She was smiling as she sang along to the music
She knew the words to Kokomo, too
We both began singing together
It was fun, something so fun to do. .

She was kind , sweet and appealing
I was attracted to her wit and her charm
The wind began to pick up a bit
We were expecting a tropical storm.

The heat from the blazing afternoon sun
Did not abate or tarnish our fun
We laughed and shared a few stories
Then watched when the rain had begun.

The temperature dropped, it felt pleasant
As we danced to a few slow tunes
Before long the storm had passed us by
We now danced by the light of the moon.

She lived and worked on the island
It was the beginning of a lasting kinship
I would take her back to my apartment
I would kiss all the salt from her lips.

LACK OF KINDNESS

Simple acts of kindness,
Sharing and being fair
Are concepts simply lacking
By those who just don’t care.

They can’t seem to bear,
To lend a helping hand
To help someone less fortunate
They just don’t understand.

Punishing the poor
To benefit the wealthy
Is a heartless, selfish act
And simply isn’t healthy.

How could a doctor saving lives
Take pennies from the meek?
Is building up his empire
The only pleasure that he seeks?

Have you seen Ben Carson house?
It’s extravagant and grand
He is robbing from the poor
To make himself a richer man.

He lacks a moral compass
No fairness or thoughts of kindness
He’s a greedy, heartless taker
Selfish, cruel and now he’s spineless.

Don’t know what it will take
To turn this all around
Start with impeaching Trump
Run him straight, right out of town.

He’s clearly at the helm
He is the driving force
Problem is he’s lost
And, has taken us off course.

A REMINDER

If you think you’ve got it bad
Stop and think again
There are people without water
Whose world is caving in.

They have no clothes, no shelter
No food for them to eat
They eat berries, twigs and sticks
Don’t know the luxury of meat.

Wondering when the next bomb drops
Afraid to go to sleep at night
Who knows what they’ll wake up to
What scary, freaky sites.

No one there to protect them
To hold them in their arms
To comfort and to love them
To keep them safe from harm.

So stop whining about your love life
Or the promotion that passed you by
Think about the children
Who were left alone to die.

TRUMP’S BROMANCE

Trump’s enjoying a bromance
With the President of France
It has become apparent
By his flirting and his stance.

Though touching in the open
Seems a little strange to me
It was hard to miss the attraction
It was there for all to see.

Shaking hands and hugging
Occurred too many times
Brought the world’s attention
To what was on his mind.

Kissing and open flirting
By two married men on TV
Seemed a little weird for us
I think you would agree.

Dusting off his shoulder
Reaching out to hold his hand
Seemed a little forward
For a happily married man.

AN INTERROGATION

via Daily Prompt: Elaborate

Elaborate

An elaborate story was once told to me
About a suspect’s alibi
Too many components, too complex
It had to be an outright lie.

I’d spoken to many crooks and thieves
Knew just what I was looking for
This guy wasn’t being upfront with me
He was bad right down to the core.

A psychopath, with lying tendencies
And such evil inclinations
I wasn’t buying any of it
He was also on probation.

He had served time for lying and cheating
Had spent ten years in a local prison
He’d been out for only thirty days
Now picked up for an obvious violation.

Under wraps, under lock and key
Was where he was going to be
Lying and trying to deceive
Was not going to work with me.

He wasn’t going to get away with this
We had him dead to right
Once I was done with my questioning
He’d be locked up for the rest of his life.

THE STORMY BEACH

I love to feel the night beach air
Blowing thru my hair
The smell, the way it makes me feel
The cool, fresh, salty air.

The sand feels cool beneath my feet
The water surprisingly feels warm.
Maybe an indication of
An impending tropical storm.

The moon is shining overhead
Looks like I’m not alone
An osprey wades just there on the shore
His presence sets the tone.

A picture perfect silhouette
He stands still ….so picturesque
I gaze upon him motionless
A glimpse of nature’s best.

The wind picks up, the bite of the sand
Blowing hard across the dunes
Lets me know,  it’s time to go
Need to head back very soon.

The bird takes heed, flys overhead
The waves now getting rough
The moon tucks behind the clouds
The rain now falling from above.

SET YOU FREE

I opened the window
I called out to the trees
I begged them to bring you
Bring you back to me.

I called on the forces
Of Karma and hope
I asked them to find you
To widen the scope.

I begged and I pleaded
Got down on my knees
But, it made no difference
No difference for me.

I called out to the heavens
I called up above
I beseeched the angels
The angels of love.

No way could they help me
They looked down upon me
They said they were sorry
You had to be free.

TURNED AROUND

TURNED AROUND

“I now bestow upon you,
the gift of self-esteem”
Said the “King of Ego” to me
As he appeared within my dream.

He empowered and infused me
With the strength I needed to
Be the best that I could be
To stop feeling so sad and blue.

Tired of feeling oh so worthless
I now had the power and the glory
Things started to get better
I stopped the anxiety, the worry.

I tugged upon my bootstraps
Got myself off of the ground
I finally had it figured out
I turned myself around.

HIGH SCHOOL DAYS

I’m sitting in the parking lot
At a franchise of MacDonalds
Signing on to WiFi
Hope to save my hard earned dollars.

Sipping on my iced tea
Chewing on those crunchy fries
Waiting for a friend of mine
Who I know…. so often lies.

I’ve been in the car all day
Been driving him around
He moves about from place to place
Knows everyone in town.

He was quite the catch in  school
Had a cute, sorta devilish grin
But, now he’s going nowhere
No one has time for him.

All his friends are now successful
They have achieved and they’ve moved on
Most are married or divorced
While he still sings… the same old song.

“Remember when”, he often says
Recalling the good old days
“When we were back in high school”,
I’ve heard him often say.

Basketball on Friday nights
Dances in the auditorium
Those were the highlights of his life
That’s all that matters to him.

No interest in an earned degree
Or starting a new business
No real plans to get ahead
Have seemed to spark his interest.

He could have gone to college
Had a four-year scholarship
But didn’t want to study
Now his biggest and worst regret.

He lives behind the trailer park
Drinks beer and smokes cigarettes
Spends most of his time getting drunk or stoned
In an effort to forget.

STOP SETTLING

So scared to walk away
But too afraid to stay
Have to find a reason
You have to find a way.

Aren’t you sick of feeling worthless
Like a hopeless whining fool?
You need to get up, get busy
Figure out what you should do.

Standing there alone in place
Isn’t really helping you
Feeling paralyzed and frozen
Not knowing what to do.

Nothing’s going to happen
Till you make up my mind
To stop settling for mediocrity
Stop wasting so much time.

Idle hands around you
All they do is slow you down
You need some inspiration
Pull yourself off of the ground.

You’ve gotta make it happen
Take your pride down from the shelf
Dust off your self-esteem right now
It’s time to help yourself.
