HIGH SCHOOL DAYS

I’m sitting in the parking lot
At a franchise of MacDonalds
Signing on to WiFi
Hope to save my hard earned dollars.

Sipping on my iced tea
Chewing on those crunchy fries
Waiting for a friend of mine
Who I know…. so often lies.

I’ve been in the car all day
Been driving him around
He moves about from place to place
Knows everyone in town.

He was quite the catch in  school
Had a cute, sorta devilish grin
But, now he’s going nowhere
No one has time for him.

All his friends are now successful
They have achieved and they’ve moved on
Most are married or divorced
While he still sings… the same old song.

“Remember when”, he often says
Recalling the good old days
“When we were back in high school”,
I’ve heard him often say.

Basketball on Friday nights
Dances in the auditorium
Those were the highlights of his life
That’s all that matters to him.

No interest in an earned degree
Or starting a new business
No real plans to get ahead
Have seemed to spark his interest.

He could have gone to college
Had a four-year scholarship
But didn’t want to study
Now his biggest and worst regret.

He lives behind the trailer park
Drinks beer and smokes cigarettes
Spends most of his time getting drunk or stoned
In an effort to forget.

STOP SETTLING

So scared to walk away
But too afraid to stay
Have to find a reason
You have to find a way.

Aren’t you sick of feeling worthless
Like a hopeless whining fool?
You need to get up, get busy
Figure out what you should do.

Standing there alone in place
Isn’t really helping you
Feeling paralyzed and frozen
Not knowing what to do.

Nothing’s going to happen
Till you make up my mind
To stop settling for mediocrity
Stop wasting so much time.

Idle hands around you
All they do is slow you down
You need some inspiration
Pull yourself off of the ground.

You’ve gotta make it happen
Take your pride down from the shelf
Dust off your self-esteem right now
It’s time to help yourself.

BREAK IN

He tried to kick my door down
One more time…it would give way
I stood there shaking and praying
But, he finally walked away.

Maybe he was just a kid
Thought breaking in was fun
A bottle of booze, some food in the fridge
But, what if he was carrying a gun?

Did he know that I was there inside?
That I was home alone?
He probably just wandered by
And thought no one was home.

I should have kept my pistol loaded
It was there right in my purse
With hands shaking, I held it close
Hoping things didn’t get any worse.

I finally called 911
Who knew, when he’d come back?
I was scared and freaking out
So afraid of being attacked.

The police arrived, took some photos
The door was clearly damaged
They gave me a ride into town
Said this guy was on a rampage.

Guess I was lucky, it could have been worse
What if he had gotten in?
I was freaked out, afraid, so scared
I couldn’t stop thinking of him.

I loved the woods, the sound of the birds
Such beautiful smells and sights
But the sound of the Sheriff’s final words
Still echoes with me at night.

Mam, you’re not safe staying here alone
Might consider moving into town
There are a lot of unsavory fellows out here
Out here… just wandering around.

A DEDICATED BLOGGER

via Daily Prompt: Partake

Partake

As a dedicated blogger
I am committed and steadfast
Loyal to using the prompt
As my literary task.

But selecting words like “partake”
Has me a little crazy
I am reluctant and annoyed
But, please don’t think I’m lazy.

I can make use of the word
I can turn phrases all around
I can rhyme them, I can use them
I can be somewhat profound.

Don’t mean to be an ingrate
Please know I really care
I wait patiently each day
To see what word is there.

Some days I feel inspired
I’m excited to partake
But, not so much today
This one’s a word I hate.

MY COUSIN

via Daily Prompt: Mallet

Mallet

My cousin took a mallet
And hit me in the head
I fell to the ground
They thought that I was dead.

The blood around me puddled
My sister started to scream
My cousin was a little brat
As you can see, was kinda mean.

He ran around in circles
Shouting, Johnny went to heaven
He appeared to be quite happy
He had recently turned seven.

Somewhere in his twisted mind
Thought he was doing me a favor
Giving me a send off
A chance to see our savior.

After years of meds and therapy
My cousin came around
Now somewhat successful
The best lawyer in our town.

After forty-seven stitches
Time spent in the ICU
I made out all right, I guess
Just a little black n blue.

AN INTRUDER

My uncle had died a year ago. He wasn’t married and had no children. He had a will drawn up and left the only piece of real estate he owned to me. I was the last surviving relative. It was a small log cabin, on the edge of the woods, about 20 miles outside of town.
It was a beautiful piece of property, but isolated. It was perfect for me, no internet, no TV, just a bookcase filled with classics and a wine shelf fully stocked with several bottles of rather expensive wine.
I wasn’t lonely. I spent my days gardening, napping or gathering wildflowers.
My evenings were spent in the company of Hemingway or Frost.
One night, somewhere around 2 a.m., I was awakened by the sound of heavy footsteps, traipsing across the front porch. I heard the rattle of the handle, on the front door to the cabin. Fortunately, I had by sheer habit, remembered to lock the door. The lights were out. It was pitch black, except for the overshadowing of the crescent moon above. I had been asleep for a good hour.
Seconds later, my intruder slammed his heavy boot up against the thick oak door, in an attempt to dislodge the lock. The sound was deafening! It reverberated again and again! Each time, I imagined a vicious monster entering the room and my life began to flash before my eyes. I was terrified, but didn’t scream or make a sound! I stifled my impulse to cry out for help. Thankfully, the door was solid!!!! It didn’t budge!
My uncle had built the cabin himself. Fortunately for me, he was an accomplished craftsman. The cabin was well built and the door was insulated and secure! After a few more attempts, my uninvited guest had given up. He attempted to peer thru the windows before walking away, but each one was obscured by solar shades or light diminishing curtains. I thought maybe he’d try and break a window, but the glass was insulated and extremely thick. Maybe he knew better than to try. Perhaps he had previous experience with Andersen’s product line and knew it would be a futile effort, to try and break thru one of the windows. All were locked and in place.
He couldn’t see me, lying paralyzed on the sofa, facing away from the front door. It appeared that no one was at home because there were no cars parked out front. My car needed a wheel alignment and the brakes done. It was parked in town at the local garage.
I waited a few minutes before I had the courage to move. I was scared to death! Was he still out there? Would he see me or hear me, if I moved from the couch? My heart was pounding in my chest! I was shaking uncontrollably! I felt the floorboards creak beneath my feet , as I stepped down off the sofa and walked across the room. I got up slowly and approached the window to the left of the door. I pulled back then curtain, ever so slowly, just a crack.
So afraid that he might see the curtain move, realize someone was inside the cabin and decide to come back for me! I could see from a distance, the back of a large man wearing jeans, boots, a tan baseball cap and a red and black, flannel, shirt jacket. He was walking away from the house. I watched as his silhouette disappeared into the woods. My cell phone was in my purse. I fumbled thru all of the nonsensical objects, before securing my phone and dialing 911.
A woman answered.
“911. What is is the nature of your emergency?”

Frantically I responded, “A man tried to break in! I need help. Please, send someone! Please, I need help! You have to get someone here right away!”

In a calm and controlled manner, the dispatcher responded, “Are you hurt, mam?”

“No, but you need to call the police! Please send the police!”
I was obviously panic-sticken.

“Is the man still there? Is he there now? Is he still at your location”?

“No, I mean, Maybe. I’m not sure. He went into the woods. He’s still here, somewhere”, I exclaimed.

“What’s your location?”

“I’m on County Route 7, three miles from the bridge, heading north.”, I reported breathlessly.

I was beginning to hyperventilate. Conscious of my laboured breathing, I attempted to slow my respirations. The last thing I needed was to pass out!

“Do you have a street address?”, she asked.

“No, it’s a log cabin…” I interrupted.

“Oh, Skip’s old place”, she said with assurance.

“Yes, yes!” Obviously, she knew the cabin. She may have even known my uncle.

“Don’t worry, dear! Help is on the way! Are all of the doors locked?”

“Yes. He tried breaking down the door. He tried getting in”! Please, he might come back. They’ve got to hurry”!

“ Are there any weapons in the house?”

“Yes, I have a pistol”.

“Okay. Just try to remain calm. Where is the gun?”

“It’s in my suitcase.

She stayed on the phone with me for the next fifteen minutes, until
the local sheriff’s car pulled up in front of the house. I had enough time to retrieve my LC 380 and load the magazine into place before the police arrived. I hated guns, but had always been told that I’d be glad I had one… for just this type of an incident. I was glad I didn’t have access to it, though… when I initially woke me up and heard the doorknob move. I probably would have fired and maybe killed him. Wasn’t it better, that he just left on his own? I wrestled with the thought of killing someone in self-defense. A million scenarios were running thru my mind.
What was taking the police so long? Was the guy going to come back?
I unlocked and opened the front door when the sheriff finally arrived. My hands were shaking! It took me three attempts before I was able to successfully unlatch the lock. Once thru the door, I ran out onto the porch.
I told the sheriff and his deputy what had happened. They took pictures of the damage to the door and took my statement. They offered to drive me into town. I wasn’t about to stay in the cabin alone. I packed my bags and drove back with the two officers.
I was able to find an inexpensive hotel. Once settled into my room, I called a friend and made arrangements to come and stay with her until I could decide what to do.
The following day, I called a local contractor and arranged to have the lock and the door repaired.
I rented a car and drove out to meet him at the cabin.
He was a large man wearing jeans, boots, a tan baseball cap and a red and black, flannel, shirt jacket.

THE END.

BEST FRIENDS

Whatever it takes, you can be certain
I’ll be the one standing right by your side
No matter what, thru thick and thin
I’ll tell the truth, you know I won’t lie.

Buckets of bullshit might come your way
But you’ll never receive any from me
I’m a straight shooter, always forthright
I’m the one you can always believe.

Sick of betrayals, friends turning their backs
When you least expect it, he’ll walk out the door
He doesn’t really care, he never did
You ’ve been down this same highway before.

Hoping he’s changed and things will be different
Is an illusion that’s not gaining traction
There’s no mistake, he’s laughing at you
Open your eyes, and see his reaction.

A hater, a fake, a jester, a fool
Can’t you see he crossed over the line?
There’s no mistake, he’s goofing on you
He’ll make a fool out of you every time.

He’s got your number, he knows your address
He’s got “missile lock” on you
You can’t escape his wrath and his reign
He knows exactly what he wants to do.

He’s gonna use you, he knows how to play
He’ll turn your whole world upside down
Before he’s finished, you’ll be on your knees
You’ll be meek and won’t utter a sound.

The master, the king, the bully, the devil
You’ll be crying before he’s through
He’ll make sure you know how he feels
He’ll never be in love with you.

Stick with me, I won’t let him hurt you
I’ll be standing right by your side
We’ll be together he won’t stand a chance
To break down your reserve, or your pride.

He’ll walk away, he will be gone
He’ll disappear right before your eyes
Once he knows you’re onto him
That you see thru his alluring disguise.

You can start over, don’t need his permission
You’re somebody all on your own
He’s not for you, you don’t need him
Don’t let him hear you whine or moan.

You’ve got this, girl ….take it from me
You don’t need a guy like him
Guys like him are a dime a dozen
All you need is a really good friend.

SOMEONE BETTER

Don’t think you have a future
Cause you’re going to get hurt
Don’t read into what she’s saying
Don’t hang onto every word.

You’ll be gone by morning
Don’t plan to stick around
You’re just a mere distraction
A new shiny toy she’s found.

She has no depth or feelings
She’ll use and she’ll abuse
She’ll take complete advantage
She’ll get the best of you.

Don’t dare to start believing
Think this is any more
Than a simple late night hookup
That’s all she’s looking for.

She’s gonna leave you crying
You’ll be begging her for more
But it won’t do you any good
Once she’s done, you’re out the door.

She’s got no time for small talk
Doesn’t care what’s on your mind
Not interested in knowing you
Not going to waste her time.

Always looking for her next fix
The climax and the high
Someone better to spend time with
Then it’s time to say goodbye.

SIRENS WAILING

I feel my heartbeat inside my chest
My head pounding harder and harder
My heart is racing faster and faster
I think I need a glass of water.

I’m starting to sweat, feeling diaphoretic
My first thought is to get back home
Everyone’s talking, talking at once
Wish they’d all just leave me alone.

I have no idea what is happening
I’m feeling a pain in the middle of my back
Is this what it’s… suppose to feel like
When you’re having a heart attack?

The end is near, this is it
The day of remorse and regret
My time has finally come to an end
I am facing the ultimate…..death.

EMS arrives, EMT’s on hand
With blankets and tanks of O2
I feel weak and oh so helpless now
There’s nothing I could possibly do.

Sirens wailing, lights flashing
I wake up in the ICU
I’m feeling confused and thankful
Looks like I made it, I finally came to.

My family was there, with tears in their eyes
I was lucky to be alive
So many thoughts running thru my mind
I was grateful that I survived.

* This is fiction.

THE ELITE

via Daily Prompt: Parallel

Parallel

When I watch the elite gymnasts on the parallel bars
I marvel at their talent and agility
So much work, so much dedication
Such amazing, strength and versatility.

They start when they are very young, a lifelong ambition
They are committed, focused and driven
Hard to believe, such little ones
Are so fit and incredibly conditioned.

Day to day with total focus, they will go to the gym
No matter what they feel or what they want to do
They continue to strive, with all they have
Hoping their goals and dreams will come true.

Thru disappointment, rejection, and all of the pain
Their concentration’s there for sure
Heartbreaking to know, the grief and the sorrow
That such young children must endure.
