THE STRUGGLE

He almost fell off the wagon
He had poured himself a drink
But, then came to his senses
And poured it down the sink.

He struggled each and every day
With an obsessive, cold addiction
The lure was fierce, a battle of wills
But, he had made a strong commitment.

He was trying his best, trying so hard
He wanted and needed so much
To reach out to gently hold her
He longed for her sweet loving touch.

The longing and the wanting
The need to fill the void
The need that he had struggled with
The craving for alcohol.

Overwhelmed, it had implored him
To walk away and abandon it all
He didn’t want to give in or give up
He had managed not to fall.

Back into the cavern so far below
Into the madness that awaited him
Away from his family, away from the love
He understood, he truly needed them.

He grappled to hold on and fight
He continued to be strong
He knew that he could make it
He had been trying for so long.

As he watched, the drink he was craving
Now circling the drain
He remembered all he had struggled for
And was not going to go there again.

WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE

via Daily Prompt: Suddenly

Suddenly

He suddenly realized
That it was over, said and done.
He finally realized that he had lost her
To someone.

Years of all the emotional abuse
Had finally come to an end
She finally found her center
And was no longer giving in.

Giving in to all the madness
She was finally back on track
She had no intention of ever
Of ever going back.

He was surprised and bewildered
Thought he could do whatever he wanted
That she would always capitulate
He now was left to wonder.

When did he lose his grasp on her
When did she slip away
There was nothing left for him to do
Nothing left for him to say.

He had a way of controlling her
Through belittling intimidation
She was too weak to see through him
Giving in to the humiliation.

But thankfully someone had finally appeared
Someone incredibly kind and true
She was now able to stand up to him
She knew what she needed to do.

She packed her bags, headed out the door
Knew she had made the right decision
He asked her to stay, wanted her back
He begged to be forgiven.

But too much water under the bridge
Too many years of hate and pain
Nothing could ever come of this
She knew he’d never change.

STEP UP

Step up, don’t settle
Or sell yourself out
You are worth more
Than your fears and your doubts.

Your wit and your charm
Your thoughtful ways
Hold yourself back
Don’t give it away.

You can do better
Set the bar higher
Stop wasting your time
When you know she’s a liar.

Stop being so needy
Stop begging for more
Show her your strength
Then show her the door.

Stand up and push back
She’s not for you
You need someone
That’s honest and true.

She’ll take what you give
She’s not a fool
She’s plotting and planning
She knows what to do.

Working you over
With crocodile tears
Gaining your sympathy
Over the years.

While you’re at home crying
She’s out on the town
You know that she’s out there
Out playing around.

Your buddies are laughing
Your family’s confused
They hate watching you
Being used and abused.

THE FIRST TIME

via Daily Prompt: Wonder

Wonder

Wonder and amazement
Magic and awe
The feeling of elation
When I initially saw.

You for the first time
Enter the room
There was music and fireworks
I had to meet you.

Something about you
The look in your eyes
When you walked in
I had to know why.

Why was I there?
Was it meant to be?
I wanted to know you
I had to believe.

That you felt the same way
When you looked at me
Your gaze and expression
I could actually see.

My future before me
Would include you
With you there beside me
Nothing I couldn’t do.

I felt so elated
The feeling….sublime
I had to be with you
You had to be mine.

HARD TO LET GO

Sometimes we stay
When we should go
Sometimes we find it
Too hard to let go.

We hope things will change
But they never do
It always comes back
To me and then you.

No better outcome
Things stay the same
The truth is apparent
And we’re both to blame.

You can’t ask someone
If the feeling’s not there
To pretend to need you
To pretend that they care.

The tears they are crying
Are not meant for you
They’re waiting around
For their dreams to come true.

Waiting for someone
They can relate to
Someone who’s different
And nothing like you.

Maybe tomorrow
Maybe today
She’ll say that it’s over
Then she’ll walk away.

Gather your pride
Your purse and your cash
Be ready to end it
It’s not meant to last.

Once she has met him
Once she has gone
You’ll wish that you hadn’t
Waited so long.

PARADISE

Sunshine and palm trees
So lucky are we
Living in paradise
I just can’t believe.

The ocean, the weather
The sand and the sun
Building sand castles
Are always such fun.

Sailboats and surfboards
Waves passing by
The beautiful clouds
And the pretty blue sky.

Walk to the pier or
Down to the jetty
Watching the ships
The boats and the ferry.

Sitting with friends
Under umbrellas
Or holding hands
With your favorite fella.

Cold drinks in the cooler
Snacks changing hands
Being together
A perfect day planned.

ONE CARELESS KISS

via Daily Prompt: Uncompromising

Uncompromising

Wanted to ask you
To meet me for coffee
We’ll talk it over
Why don’t you call me?

Tuesday would work
Will you be free?
Let’s get together
Will you talk to me?

It’s been over a week
I know you’re upset
I know you are angry
Please don’t forget.

All of the time
That we spent together
Should count for something
It’s got to get better.

Don’t hold a grudge
What good would it do?
Give me a chance
I’ll tell you the truth.

She didn’t matter
It was only one time
You’ve got to forgive me
Please say that you’re mine.

I had too many drinks
I wasn’t clear headed
She came onto me
You’ve got to forget it.

Never again
I promise you this
All that it was
Was one careless kiss.

Though uncompromising
I’m begging you
Please reconsider
I swear I’ll be true.

What will it take
Please forgive me
I’ll do anything
I’m down on my knees.

Let’s start all over
Please give me a chance
I can be what you want
Please don’t say that you can’t.

TEST TRACK at EPCOT

Spent the day at Disney
With my youngest adult son
We had such a wonderful day
Until the day was done.

It was his idea to take a ride
He assured me it would be fun
We got our fast passes ready
This would be an easy one.

Not a roller coaster,
And, not a Ferris Wheel
The car would go a little fast
But would stay on even keel.

No mention of the start and stop
Just high speeds around a track
No reason for me to be alarmed
And, it wouldn’t hurt my back.

We sat down in a racing car
Proceeded to buckle up
The ride was fast, but more than that
It would start and abruptly stop.

Start and stop, again and again
Till I felt like throwing up
I hung on tight and prayed to God
Cause I had…. had enough.

Who knew that I’d get dizzy?
Who knew that I’d get sick?
It took 48 hours and some Zofran
To finally do the trick.

My back did take a beating
I don’t advise it for someone
Although, if you’re under 30
You might find this ride quite fun.

I think I’ll stick with NEMO or
The MY LITTLE MERMAID ride
They are gentle and quite easy
And, have never made me cry.

OVER AND OVER

Stop leading me on
I know that you’re just lying
You’ll leave me on my own
All alone and crying.

I‘ve been down this road before
I know just what you’ll do
Don’t come onto me
We are over, we are through.

Walk away from me
Nothing‘s any different
You’ll break my heart again
You’ve no interest in commitment.

You like to fool around
It’s all about your pleasure
You’ll just waste my time
This will go on forever.

I can’t get over you
The loop plays over and over
Your memory lives on
But, we will never be together.

A DISTANT MEMORY

I’m being held captive
By a distant memory
No matter what I try to do
I can’t seem to break free.

You left me, oh so long ago
Battered and badly bruised
Can’t help myself, I think of you
I keep looking for some clues.

What was it that I did wrong?
What turned your heart away?
Was it something that I did.
Or something I didn’t say?

Devastated and feeling sad,
It’s hard for me to believe
That I never really mattered to you
I now mourn you, as I grieve.

My advice….run for the hills
If it sounds a little too good to be true
Or you’ll end up with a broken heart
She’ll make a fool of you.

She isn’t really worth it
I know just what she’ll do
She’s not there for the long haul
She’ll walk right out on you.
