A LASTING LOVE

My heart cries out
For your loss
Now that he’s gone
You  feel  so lost.

Hold on…. be still
He’s there with you
His soul …. his spirit
Still rings  true.

His energy
Will live on
It can’t be taken
Its force is strong.

Hold onto to love
To memories
Within your heart
He’ll always be.

No one can change
The way you feel
Your thoughts and dreams
Though so surreal.

Can give you hope
Can give you solace
A lasting love
He always promised.

A SECRET

Underneath the old stone bridge
We played most everyday
That’s where he shared his story
That’s where I heard him say.

He wished that he  could fly
Get  up and fly away
There he  prayed for a miracle
He prayed and prayed each day.

It wasn’t  a sworn secret
That I was pledged to keep
I shared his  story that same night
Before I fell  asleep.

I told my dad about him
Before I went to bed
He said some things are private
Some things better left unsaid.

In the morning after breakfast
I headed to the bridge
I sat there waiting for him
Along the water’s edge.

The kids at school were vicious
They talked behind his back
They said they didn’t like him
Because the boy was black.

I skipped stones for hours
I waited patiently
But he never showed up
Wish he had  come with me.

They found him in his bedroom
He had hung himself
Telling me his secret
A desperate cry for help.

ON YOUR WATCH

Down on my luck
Now out of a job
No end in sight
When will it stop?

Kids out of school
Time on their hands
Needing to feel
That you understand.

Not feeling great
In my MAGA hat
Wondering what happened
Why you said all that.

You don’t wear a mask
Say it’s not your style
There’s a virus out there
But you’re in denial.

People are sick
People are dying
You don’t make an effort
You’re not even trying.

Black lives do matter
Stop the looting and riots
Stop spreading hate
Be kind…. why not try it?

Stop playing golf
Start paying attention
You are the problem
The source of our tension.

It’s under your watch
What are you doing
To inspire through example
To save us from ruin?

BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU

Learning to appreciate
My life without you
Enjoying sunsets, happiness
The things I like to do.

No longer feeling hampered
Encumbered and subdued
There is life outside  my grief
My  world’s better without you.

Haunting photos, memories
Of love that didn’t last
The cheating, lies and false pretense
It’s  gone …. now in the past.

Constant nagging ….. sights and sounds
That plagued me with desire
Banished …. are  cast away
Mere ashes in the fire.

Too many years …. so much time
Wasted thoughts of long ago
What we had ….. is over now
It’s time to let it go.

MAKE YOUR BED

Try to find happiness
It’s time …. It’s been awhile
Life is so short
Find a reason to smile.

Don’t wait for tomorrow
Make the most of today
There’s got to be something
Do your best …. find a way.

Don’t wallow in heartache
Move around …. rearrange
It’s time to be happy
It’s time for a change.

Find joy in the small things
The old and the new
It’s within your grasp
It’s all up to you.

Let go of the sadness
Don’t give up or give in
Your life isn’t over
It’s about to begin.

Make the most of the time
That’s been given to you
It’s not to be wasted
Find something to do.

Sort out your photos
Clean out your drawers
Read a good book
Or go to the store.

Wake up …. make your bed
Have some coffee or  tea
Find a reason to be happy
Find a reason to believe.

WITHOUT YOU

You were taken so abruptly
There was no time to say goodbye
I can’t believe this happened
I can’t help but wonder why.

All the daily jobs and chores
You took care of every one
Now I have to figure out
How to somehow get things done.

Just the simple daily tasks
The yard work and the trash
If I dare to need instructions
You’re not here for me to ask.

Dinner still at six o’clock
Even though you won’t be home
I sit at the table by myself
I eat my dinner all alone.

The nights so hard to deal with
I hear every creak and sound
No one comes to visit
No one’s called or been around.

So lonely here without you
All I have are photographs
I miss your smile, your tenderness
The way you made me laugh.

It’s a lot for me to deal with
I don’t know just what to do
I feel so sad and lonely
So lonely without you.

OUR MAIL

Don’t mess with our mail
Our letters and cards
We need correspondence
Don’t make this so hard.

Don’t tamper…. destroy
Impede or delay
We wait for our mail
To arrive everyday.

Letters from lawyers
Books …. medications
Please don’t disrupt
And cause complications.

Voting by mail
An option …. a right
Why instigate
A protest or fight?

You won’t get far
Manipulating the ballots
We’re on to you
We simply won’t have it!

Don’t mess with our mail
Our postage…. our clerks
None of your tactics
Against us will work.

We send and  receive
Cards, photos and letters
Announcements and packages
Whether good or bad weather.

Through rain …. or through snow
Through sleet….. or through hail
Our postal workers
Will deliver our mail.

A SHINING BRIGHT STAR

You wanted to go
You’d risk it all
The grass ….. a bit greener
You could stumble and fall.

Not any better
Just taller than most
I knew you were chasing
A vision, a ghost.

Down by the river
There under the bridge
Forced into the landscape
There you were wedged.

I tried but I couldn’t
Pull you out in time
The water …. the current
The mud and the slim.

The moss on the rocks
Was your saving grace
You were able to push free
You made your escape.

You continued the journey
She was there on dry land
Her dress flowing freely
With another man.

He wasn’t her father
You knew from afar
He was her new lover
Her shining bright star.

You walked home alone
Feeling cold and upset
Now you would deal with
The loss and regret.

I TRIED

When did the lights go out?
The day that you met her?
How did this fall apart?
How did this all occur?

I tried the best I could
To satisfy your needs
Tell me what went wrong
Tell me, tell me …. please.

I tried to make it work
Gave in to you each time
Did all the things you wanted
Hoping you would change your mind.

When the music stopped
I scrambled for a seat
She was next to you
You should have been with me.

No room at the inn
I’ve been pushed aside
I just wasn’t good enough
To make the cut ….. I tried.

BREAK THE SPELL

What will it take
To break the spell
To save me from
This life of hell?

The constant fear
I can’t be free
I can’t escape
Can barely see.

Can’t see beyond
The memories
That plaque me daily
Endlessly.

Wanting more
Not satisfied
Feeling like
I’m paralyzed.

Can’t move forward
Can’t go back
A victim of
This heart attack.

A new beginning
A change of pace
Might help me to
Forget your face.

Your voice, your smile
That evil grin
I hear you laugh
Again and again.

Some sage, some herbs
An eye of newt
Will help me
To be free of you.

The potion
I will gladly drink
I swallow all
No time to think.

I wake refreshed
My mind is clear
All thoughts of you
Have disappeared.
