A THIN FRAYED THREAD

via Daily Prompt: Thin

Thin

Hanging on a thin, frayed thread
So brittle and oh so fragile
Hard to imagine the survival of love
The endurance… so incomprehensible.

Bound by guilt and senseless blame
Looking for the reasons why
Scratching only upon the surface
Finding just one reason to try.

Crying out to be alone
Smoothered and overwhelmed
Wishing there was one secret, just one
Just one you’d never tell.

The days and years pass by
They take your heart, they take your soul
Nothing left at the end of the day
You let it go, then you are old.

Just one pass on the carousel
How many try to grab the ring?
Too many sit and wonder why
They didn’t care, it meant nothing.

A COLD DREARY DAY

I wandered along the sandy beach
It was a cold, damp, dreary day
I was hoping to try and clear my head
I walked for quite a ways.

No one else had ventured out
I was on the beach alone
It was there that I stumbled upon
Some keys and a new cell phone.

I picked them up, dusted them off
Put them inside my jacket pocket
Wondered who had dropped them there
Saw the keys were attached to a locket.

Further along I realized
Someone had gone out for a swim
That’s when I saw the cold remains
That’s when I stumbled upon them.

Two strangers lying on the beach
They had washed up on the shore
A man and woman lying there
Not breathing anymore.

Took out my phone, called 911
Explained how I found the deceased
I gave them the keys and cell phone, too
Gave it all to the local police.

They set up some parameters
Using tape and some wooden stakes
Hoping that scouring the area
Might provide them with a break.

They looked for clues, for evidence
Was this an accidental drowning?
The riptides were pretty strong that day
They were lucky they had found them.

Forensics arrived with body bags
They were examined, then placed inside
No one was there to shed a tear
No one was there to even cry.

I noted they both had matching rings
Sad to know they had lost their way
Not a good day to go swimming out there
A sad ending to this dark, dreary day.

MENDED FENCES

via Daily Prompt: Pedigree

Pedigree

He thought his uptown pedigree
Put him on a higher plane
Believed that he was different
Truth is we’re all the same.

Get down upon your high horse
Who do you think you are?
You carry on like royalty
Like you’re a movie star.

Wealth does not define us
What makes you think you’re better?
Stop judging by appearances
Being kind is all that matters.

Step down a peg, come down to earth
Wake up, come to your senses
Stop looking down on others
Time to mend those broken fences.

NO PEDIGREE

My puppy has no pedigree
She simply is a mutt
Still thinks that she is special
She’s not into all that stuff.

She holds her own with others
Doesn’t care about their genes
She sniffs around and plays with them
She’s trim and always clean.

She wears a simple collar
Eats her food out of a box
She is plain and very playful
She’s not cunning like a fox.

She is my little baby
So cuddly and cute
She comes running when you call her
Always thrilled to be with you.

Even though she is a mixed breed
To me she’s royalty
She’s my special little princess
She means everything to me.

THE JACKALS

via Daily Prompt: Slight

Slight

A slight miscalculation
Can make all of the difference
A change, a step off to the side
Can alter your foundation.

Don’t let yourself be fooled or tricked
Lured into a web of deceit
Keep your eyes wide open
Beware of those you meet.

Protect yourself, all you hold dear
The jackals are there, they’re waiting
You’ll never know what they are capable of
Your fate they’re contemplating.

Vulnerable and lonely
Makes you such easy prey
Be careful what you wish for
You’ll regret that fateful day.b

The day you fall for someone who
Will take you for a ride
Will take your strength, your will, your life
Leaving you without your pride.

One minute you’ll feel you have it all
They’ll make you feel so good
But they’ll cheat, connive and run around
Never doing what they should.

You’ll be made a fool of
They are void of honor and of shame
They’ll take what they want from you
You’ll have yourself alone to blame.

MY MOTHER, MY FRIEND

Hard to be without your mother
Your very best and dearest friend
The one who stood beside you
And loved you till the end.

You turned to her for comfort
To calm the raging storm
The one who would protect you
Keep you safe, keep you from harm.

No one laughs the same way
She’ll always be a part of you
She was the one you could count on
When you didn’t know just what to do.

No calling on your cell phone
No running or heading home
She’s gone, there’s no one there now
No one to depend upon.

So hard to be without her
No one knows the pain inside
The hurt you feel, the loss so deep
All you can do is sit and cry.

So hard to be alone now
No one can take her place
Remember all the good times
Close your eyes to see her face.

She is with you in her own way
Hold tight to memories
She wouldn’t want you to be sad now
Try your best to be happy.

MOODY

Moody people get to me
They always drive me crazy
They’re always complaining about “this or that”
Like a loud mouth whinny baby.

Cut it out, stop your whining
Stop spilling your misery onto me
I want to enjoy my life
So please just let me be.

Find a place where you can go
Where you can be alone
Stop making others miserable
Go off… be on your own.

Hormones, genes or lack of sleep
They have a million and one excuses
There’s too much noise it bothers them
“Turn down the stinken music”.

They are never happy
They’re never satisfied
The grass is always greener
Greener on the other side.

Take a hike, a long vacation
Somewhere far away from me
Please find a place you’ll be happier
Please go and let me be.

GOODBYE

via Daily Prompt: Core

Core

The loss of losing you
Like nothing I’ve felt before
The pain so deep inside
So deep down to my core.

I never will recover
There’s no getting over you
I’ll carry the hurt inside my soul
There’s nothing I can do.

No exorcist or voodoo, no spark
Or magic spell
Will ever bring you back to me
I live my life in hell.

The hurt so deep, it grieves me
To have to think of you
I feel so lost and empty
The love I feel…so true.

No memories, no thoughts of us
You left me in the dust
Along with all the love we knew
Left here to age and rust.

Like an old worn out toy
You’ve cast me aside
You turned and walked away from me
Last words…. a cold “goodbye”.

TAKE THE STAIRS

As you sit down on the porch
Do you really care
Which step you’re going to sit on?
You just sit upon the stairs.

Sitting on the stoop
Lends to conversation and deep thought
Friends may stop, as they walk by
They’ll stop to sit and talk.

A winding staircase and metal treads
Can give your house a different look
Steel beams and cable fasteners
Suspended with silver hooks.

Grand staircases of pageantry
An entry for the elite
Makes one feel like a princess
As they enter to meet and greet.

Fire escapes save many lives
Provide the thief with accessibility
Help the injured, filing down
The ones with serious injuries.

Running down a stairway
Quickly running to catch a train
Could prove to be an obstacle
When too many are doing the same.

Without an adequate staircase
How would we make the climb?
It would be pretty hard to do
To get up to your apartment or mine.

Let’s celebrate what we take for granted
Easy access and ease of movement
The stairs have been a means to an end
One of man’s significant achievements.

DEATH

Some days I wait for death to come
To come for me and quickly
Some days I welcome his cold, dark hands
Wanting him to come and take me.

That day will come… it’s inevitable
There is no escaping destiny
Try as you may to ward it off
Death waits for you patiently.

Some egg it on, they prod and poke
Wondering if it makes a difference
Riding too fast, not doing things right
Will it encourage death’s appearance?

The worst of us, the crankiest
Seem to live the longest
Being rude, nasty and cruel
Doesn’t enhance death’s visit upon us.

So live your life and don’t worry about
Your last fateful, dying day
The day when death will finally come
To take your life away.
