THE COFFEE CAFE

Every single afternoon
Seven days a week
I make my way to the local cafe
Located down the street.

I watch the other patrons
Some come in and sit alone
They open up their laptops
Or text and tweet on phones.

I order a cup of coffee
Extra sweet and extra light
I wonder what they like to do
How they spend their days and nights.

Some seem in a quite a hurry
They are anxious and uptight
They don’t seem to be enlightened
They are often impolite.

They neglect to fill the tip jar
They take their order and walk away
The barista usually calls out to them
“Hope you have a better day”.

Some people lack good karma
They are angry most of the time
They seem overwhelmed and miserable
Guess they have a lot on their minds.

I find it quite relaxing
Spending time at the cafe
Sometimes it’s entertaining
It’s the highlight of my day.

A MOTHER’S PLEA

A respite from the madness
A break,  a short reprieve
Can’t you see what’s happening?
A refrain is what we need.

Can’t take the stress and pressure
I’m not blaming this on you
But, can’t you show some mercy
For the pain we’re going through?

The lying and deception
The persistent thoughtlessness
We need to come together
To fill the emptiness.

Greed and selfish motives
Are tearing us apart
A lack of trust and honesty
Can’t mend a broken heart.

Tired of the excuses
Comments harsh and often crude
We have to try and find a way
There are things we  need to do.

We have to find the courage
Through the sadness and the  tears.
Find the strength within our hearts
To cast aside our hopeless fears.

Let’s try to come together
Let’s try to see this through
One last time, one last thing
We both need to do.

SOLITAIRE

Senior citizen discounts
Coffee at half price
Baristas who aren’t snobby
And always treat you right.

Sitting by the window
Passing time away
Trying to forget the day
The day you passed away.

The hands upon my shoulders
The well wishes I received
The sympathy, the condolences
I still need time to grieve.

Together for four centuries
Three kids,  four dogs and  a cat
We were really happy
I’ll never forget that.

The dust has finally settled
Our grown children all gone home
Now I sit all by myself
I sit at home alone.

My daily walk to the cafe
Gives me something I can do
Gives me purpose,  gets me dressed
Though  I wish I was with you.

Wish you were here  with me , now
It’s so hard to be on my own
I sit and sip my coffee
While playing Solitaire on my phone.

TEA TO GO

He stared at me from across the room
I wondered what he might do
If I got up from the table
Maybe then he’d make a move.

He looked somewhat professional
In his khakis and white shirt
He’d been there  sitting all alone
Guess he took time off from work.

I got up and pushed my chair in
Walked toward the register
Asked for another cup of coffee
I didn’t seem him there,  at first.

He now stood right behind me
I felt his presence  close to me
It was then I heard him mutter
“I prefer a cup of tea”.

He asked me for my number
I didn’t even blink
I didn’t hesitate
Or take the time to think.

He now seemed in quite  a hurry
Got his tea to go
I wondered if he’d call me
I had no way to know.

Two days later we met for coffee
At the same cafe nearby
I was taken with his charm
And the  sad look in  his eyes.

He was handsome in a boyish way
His hair brushed to the side
He had dark hair and a stubble
He spent a lot of time outside.

He owned a boat down at the harbor
Asked me to meet him there
I brought some sandwiches and tea
The sun was out, the weather fair.

We sailed his boat for hours
We dropped anchor near the shore
He told me he worked at the college
He’d been married once before.

His wife died quite awhile ago
They were together for six years
He’d been on his own since then
He lived on his boat, down at the pier.

We dated for about a year
I felt  loved and I was  sure
He was  the one I’d been waiting for
I felt  safe and so secure.

A chance meeting in the cafe
A look from across the room
Changed my life forever
Glad we  met that afternoon.

WE’RE BREAKING UP

Let’s stop and get some coffee
Have a cup or two
I have to tell you something
I’m breaking up with you.

I’m tired of all the fighting
The tension and the moods
Let’s face it… we’re not meant to be
I’m sick and tired of you.

Your constant,  chronic complaining
Your incessant whining and greed
You don’t know the meaning of sharing
You don’t know the meaning of clean.

You never take out the garbage
You lay around all day
You use  every excuse under the sun
Never listen to what I say.

You’d rather watch some cartoons
Than share a romantic evening at home
You spend most of your day playing video games
You just want to be left alone.

Find a girl that’s into football
Someone else who’ll serve your wings
Someone into hotdogs and  chips
Sloppy Joes and fried onion rings.

I’m tired of fast food and nachos
Pizza for dinner and your snacks
I’m going to leave you for good,  this time
I won’t be coming back.

A STATE OF EMERGENCY

We need to declare an emergency
Trump is out of control
Stop him please,  before it’s too late
He’s going to destroy us all.

You may not like his manners
He is crass and he is crude
He is selfish and narcissistic
He’ll never change his attitude.

He has crippled our economy
By shutting down our government
His petty, temper tantrum
A display of his incompetence.

His focus on wanting to build a wall
Anything to satisfy  his base
Shows clearly that he will do anything
He is desperate to save face.

We are a crippled ship floating adrift
Just waiting to be attacked
The whole world is watching
And no one’s got our back.

He’s insulted our friends and allies
He’s cavorting with our enemies
Our country is not safe or secure
He’s put us all in jeopardy.

Impeach, indict , imprison
Before it is too late
He’s got to be stopped in his tracks
All he knows is power and hate.

Declaring a National Emergency
For him to build a wall
Should be the last mistake he will make
That sadly will effect us all.

This is  not…. republican versus democrat
We have a mad man at the helm
He needs to be stopped, removed at once
We need to  get rid of him!

A CHARMER

I’m feeling so angry
I just want to spit
He dumped me for Shelia
That cruel,  cunning witch!

I gave him my best years
My car and my youth
I can’t believe
What he set out to do.

I saved for an Audi
An A6, not a 4
Now he walks out on me
He walks out the door.

My car and vacation
Were all paid in full
I gave him the green light
I’ve been such a fool.

Give me a Venti
With two shots of expresso
I need to regain
My strength and my Mojo.

Never again,
Will this happen to me
I’ll never get married
Just you wait and see!

He conned me, he fast talked
He was charming and vain
Now I sit here alone
I’m going insane.

Never fall for a charmer
For a sweet talking guy
Cause everything they say
Is an out and out lie.

HE WAS THE ONE

He stared at me for quite awhile
Those soft grey eyes, that winsome smile
An attractive guy sitting all alone
With a cup of tea and an English scone

Wearing black Levis and a black t-shirt
I’m assuming he was off from work.
He sat at a table all alone
Across the room, I was checking my phone.

When I got up, so did he
He made his way and followed me
Said he was leaving and didn’t have time
But, gave me his number, then I gave him mine.

Two days later he contacted me
We met for coffee,  I ordered tea.
He was soft spoken and very polite
We went to a movie, that very same night.

A chance meeting at a local cafe
He walked me home, his name was Ray
I had a feeling he was the one
He had long brown hair and a cute man bun.

MY TURN

So down and depressed
I walked in alone
Walked up to the counter
Holding onto my phone.

A Caramel Macchiato
Hot please, not cold
I was feeling devastated
I was feeling really old.

Another breakup
Another mistake
When will I learn?
How long will it take?

It started off great
We made love  for hours
But, like all the others
There’s no candy or flowers.

Where does it go wrong?
Why doesn’t it last?
Didn’t share too much
Of my weak, sordid past.

Light and easy
I set the tone
Then why am I sitting
Here, sadly  alone?

Try as I may
To restrain my need
They still see me hurting
They still see me bleed.

I don’t act insecure
Not too frightened or scared
But something goes wrong
This just isn’t fair.

The clock is ticking
The years passing me by
My friends are all married
I keep asking …. why?

When will it be my turn?
Am I destined to be
Alone at the party
Sitting there quietly?

I powder my nose
I get my hair done
I try and seem happy
I try to have  fun.

But, In the end
I sit here alone
Drinking my coffee
Playing games on my phone.

HARRY

Sitting with friends
Sharing a brew
Not just one cup
I’ve had a few.

Fully caffeinated
Buzzed and flying high
I said , “Hello”
When you passed me by.

You wore round,  rimmed  eyeglasses
Your hair… a bit  long
Your friends called you , “Harry”
You looked handsome and strong.

Your t-shirt and shorts
Fit you perfectly
I sat near your table
You weren’t too far from me.

I eavesdropped from a distance
I had caught your eye
Your friends encouraged you
So happy… I could cry.

You walked over and introduced yourself
Wondered if I was free
To join you on friday
“Would you have coffee with me?”

We dated for about a year
Got married in the fall
There’s nothing I would ever change
With you I have it all.
